A Ghost in the Throat
A Ghost in the Throat
Doireann Ní Ghríofa
When contemporary Irish poet Doireann Ní Ghríofa discovers the extraordinary work of eighteenth-century poet Eibhlín Dubh Ní Chonaill, she becomes captivated by the woman’s life and the grief that inspired her most famous poem. After discovering her husband’s murdered body, Eibhlín drank his blood and composed a devastating lament that would survive for centuries. Determined to recover the details of a life that history has largely erased, Ní Ghríofa embarks on a literary investigation that becomes deeply intertwined with her own experiences of pregnancy, motherhood, and domestic life. Moving between past and present, A Ghost in the Throat blends memoir, literary criticism, and historical research to explore female creativity, the silencing of women’s voices, and the intimate connections that can form between women separated by centuries. It is a lyrical meditation on grief, desire, motherhood, and the transformative power of discovering another woman’s story.

Said the Dead
Doireann Ní Ghríofa
In Cork, Ireland, a derelict Victorian psychiatric hospital is being transformed into modern apartments. For one woman, known as the Reader, the abandoned building becomes the beginning of an extraordinary investigation into the lives of the women who once lived behind its walls. Through archival records and the casebooks of Dr Lucia Strangman, one of Ireland’s earliest female asylum doctors, she discovers the stories of women whose suffering was recorded, interpreted, and too often misunderstood by the medical establishment. As the Reader becomes increasingly immersed in their histories, the boundaries between past and present, personal experience and historical memory begin to blur. Blending biography, memoir, historical research, and elements of the ghost story, Said the Dead gives imaginative life to forgotten women while examining grief, mental illness, motherhood, and the ethics of recovering voices that history has silenced.
