Advent

by Gunnar Gunnarsson

Summary

Every winter, in the days leading up to Christmas, Benedikt, a humble Icelandic shepherd, ventures into the mountains to rescue sheep stranded in the snow. Accompanied by his faithful dog and a stubborn old ram, he travels through a landscape of blizzards, frozen valleys and treacherous mountain passes, driven by a deep sense of responsibility toward vulnerable living creatures. His annual journey is physically demanding and potentially fatal, yet Benedikt accepts its hardships as an essential part of his life. Against the vastness and brutality of Iceland’s winter wilderness, his quiet determination becomes an extraordinary expression of compassion, humility and spiritual devotion. Blending the simplicity of a fable with vivid descriptions of the natural world, Gunnarsson creates a meditation on human endurance and the relationship between people and nature. Advent is both a portrait of an individual guided by kindness and a celebration of the profound peace that can be found in a life devoted to helping others.

Gunnar Gunnarsson (1889–1975) was one of Iceland’s most celebrated writers, whose novels brought Icelandic landscapes, rural life and cultural traditions to an international audience. Born into a farming family in Fljótsdalur, eastern Iceland, he grew up in modest circumstances and left for Denmark in 1907 to pursue his education and literary ambitions. Gunnarsson wrote primarily in Danish during the first part of his career, becoming particularly popular in Denmark and Germany. His works include the multivolume saga The Story of the Borg Family, the autobiographical The Church on the Mountain, and Advent, also published under the title The Good Shepherd. His writing often explores the relationship between individuals, nature, faith and moral responsibility. After returning to Iceland in 1939, Gunnarsson continued writing and worked to make his earlier Danish-language works available to Icelandic readers. His literary reputation endured beyond his lifetime, and Advent remains one of his best-known works, admired for its lyrical portrayal of the Icelandic wilderness and its celebration of compassion and perseverance.
