About

Esmé Weijun Wang is an American writer of Taiwanese heritage whose work explores mental illness, identity, disability, and the complexities of living between different worlds. She studied at Yale University and Stanford University before earning an MFA from the University of Michigan. Her writing combines personal experience with research, challenging the assumptions society makes about psychological illness and the people who live with it. Wang’s essay collection The Collected Schizophrenias (2019) received the Graywolf Press Nonfiction Prize and earned widespread critical acclaim for its nuanced portrayal of schizoaffective disorder and the limitations of psychiatric institutions. Her debut novel, The Border of Paradise (2016), explores family, identity, and mental illness across generations. In 2018, she received a Whiting Award, and Granta named her one of its Best of Young American Novelists in 2017. Through her writing, Wang creates space for experiences that are often misunderstood, bringing intellectual rigor and emotional honesty to conversations about mental health and disability.
