Andrew Boryga is an American novelist, journalist, and essayist who grew up in the Bronx, New York, and later settled in Miami, Florida. His writing has appeared in publications including The New York Times, The New Yorker, and The Atlantic. Drawing on his experiences growing up in a diverse urban community, Boryga explores identity, social class, ambition, and the ways personal stories are shaped by cultural expectations. His debut novel, Victim (2024), is a darkly comic satire about Javier Pérez, a young writer from a disadvantaged background who embellishes his personal history to gain academic and professional opportunities. As Javier builds a career by presenting an increasingly exaggerated account of his struggles, the novel examines the commercialization of trauma, the politics of representation, and the publishing industry’s appetite for stories of adversity. Combining sharp humour with an exploration of friendship and moral responsibility, Boryga challenges readers to consider the complicated relationship between authenticity, identity, and success.
