About

Azra Abbas (born 1950) is a prominent Pakistani poet and writer known for her experimental approach to Urdu literature and her candid exploration of women’s inner lives. Born in Kanpur, India, she moved to Karachi, Pakistan, as a child. After completing a master’s degree at the University of Karachi, she taught Urdu literature at a government college while developing her literary career. Abbas emerged as a distinctive voice in contemporary Urdu poetry with Sleep Journeys, published in 1981. At a time when traditional poetic forms remained influential, her embrace of prose poetry challenged established conventions and helped expand the possibilities of Urdu literary expression. Her writing explores female desire, sexuality, relationships, consciousness, and the tensions between private experience and social expectations. Over the course of her career, she has published several poetry collections, two memoirs, short stories, and a novel. Celebrated for her direct language and fearless feminist perspective, Abbas remains an important figure in contemporary Pakistani literature.
