About

Sevgi Soysal (1936–1976) was an influential Turkish novelist and short-story writer whose work challenged political authoritarianism, social injustice, and gender inequality. Born in Istanbul, she grew up primarily in Ankara and studied at Ankara University before continuing her education in Germany. She worked for Turkish radio and television and became involved in the intellectual and political movements of the 1960s and 1970s. Following Turkey’s 1971 military intervention, Soysal was arrested and imprisoned, experiences that profoundly shaped her later writing. Her novel Noontime in Yenişehir won the Orhan Kemal Novel Award in 1974, while her fiction and memoirs explored the lives of women navigating restrictive social structures and political repression. Her first novel, Walking, was censored for obscenity, reflecting the controversy her work generated. Soysal died of cancer in 1976, aged just 40, but her bold, incisive writing remains an important part of modern Turkish feminist literature.
