About

Viola Ardone (born 1974) is an Italian novelist from Naples, celebrated for her emotionally compelling historical fiction and sensitive portrayals of people challenging social conventions. She studied literature at the University of Naples Federico II and worked in educational publishing before becoming a high school teacher of Italian and Latin. Ardone gained international recognition with The Children’s Train (Il treno dei bambini, 2019), a novel inspired by the postwar initiative that sent impoverished children from southern Italy to live temporarily with families in the north. The book became an international bestseller and was adapted into a Netflix film. Her subsequent novel, The Unbreakable Heart of Oliva Denaro (2021), explores women’s autonomy and the struggle against deeply rooted patriarchal traditions in postwar Sicily. Inspired by the real-life story of Franca Viola, who refused to marry the man who abducted and assaulted her, the novel examines the courage required to challenge injustice. Ardone’s fiction combines historical detail, intimate storytelling, and a profound interest in the lives of women and children whose choices challenge the societies around them.
