Mohammed Husayn Alnaas is a Libyan novelist, short-story writer, and journalist born in 1991 in Tajoura, a suburb of Tripoli, Libya. He studied electrical engineering at the University of Tripoli, graduating in 2014, before leaving his engineering career to focus on writing. His work explores alternative narratives of Libyan life, often examining gender roles, social conventions, freedom of expression, and aspects of society that are rarely discussed openly. Alnaas gained international recognition with his debut novel, Bread on Uncle Milad’s Table (2021), which won the 2022 International Prize for Arabic Fiction. He became the first Libyan writer and the youngest author to receive the award. The novel challenges conventional ideas of masculinity and femininity through the story of a man who embraces domestic work while his wife becomes the family’s breadwinner. His earlier work includes Blue Blood (2020), a collection of short stories. Through his fiction and journalism, Alnaas brings attention to the complexities of contemporary Libyan society, using intimate personal stories to question inherited traditions and social expectations.
