Zohra Drif-Bitat is an Algerian lawyer, writer, and former independence fighter, born in 1934 in Tiaret, Algeria. She became a prominent figure in the Algerian struggle for independence from French colonial rule and was a member of the National Liberation Front (FLN) during the Algerian War of Independence. After Algeria gained independence in 1962, she pursued a legal and political career, later serving in the Algerian Council of the Nation. Her memoir, Inside the Battle of Algiers: Memoir of a Woman Freedom Fighter (originally published in French as Mémoires d’une combattante de l’ALN), recounts her experiences during the independence struggle and offers a personal perspective on colonialism, resistance, and the role of women in revolutionary movements. Through her writing and public life, Drif-Bitat has contributed to discussions of Algeria’s national history, political identity, and women’s participation in the fight for liberation.
