About

Aleksandar Hemon is a Bosnian-American novelist, essayist, and short-story writer born in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, in 1964. He was visiting the United States when the Bosnian War began in 1992, leaving him unable to return home and eventually leading him to settle in Chicago. Writing in English, his second language, Hemon has become known for his inventive prose and explorations of displacement, exile, memory, and identity. His debut collection, The Question of Bruno (2000), established his reputation for blending dark humour with experimental storytelling. His acclaimed novel The Lazarus Project (2008) intertwines historical fiction with contemporary immigration, while My Parents: An Introduction (2019) reflects on family history and the experience of exile. Hemon’s work frequently examines the lasting consequences of war and migration, questioning how language, memory, and storytelling shape our understanding of home and belonging.
