About

Sandra Cisneros is an American writer, poet, and essayist celebrated for her influential contributions to Chicana literature and her exploration of Mexican American identity, gender, class, and belonging. Born in Chicago in 1954 to a Mexican father and a Mexican American mother, she draws on her bicultural upbringing to portray the experiences of people navigating different cultural worlds. Her groundbreaking novel, The House on Mango Street (1984), tells the story of a young Latina girl growing up in a working-class Chicago neighborhood and has become a landmark of contemporary American literature. Her short-story collection Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories (1991) explores women’s lives, cultural expectations, and the search for independence. Through lyrical prose, poetic language, and vivid storytelling, Cisneros gives voice to marginalized communities and examines the intersections of identity, family, language, and social inequality. Her work has had a lasting influence on American and Latinx literature.
