Nine Yard Sarees
Nine Yard Sarees
Prasanthi Ram
Nine Yard Sarees is a collection of eleven interconnected stories following nine women across three generations of the Srinivasan family, a Tamil Brahmin family whose history stretches from India to Singapore, Australia, and the United States. Spanning nearly seven decades, from 1950 to 2019, the stories explore how migration, tradition, and changing social expectations shape women’s lives. At the heart of the collection are women negotiating the demands of family and community while trying to define themselves on their own terms. Raji, the family matriarch, struggles with life away from her homeland, while her daughter Padma attempts to raise her children according to traditional values. In the younger generation, Keerthana approaches marriage and the prospect of wearing the nine-yard saree, a garment symbolizing womanhood and cultural heritage. Through stories of love, grief, prejudice, and personal transformation, Ram examines the tensions between tradition and independence. She addresses patriarchy, caste discrimination, sexuality, and the complexities of belonging in the diaspora. Moving between generations and continents, the collection celebrates women’s resilience and solidarity while revealing the emotional costs of preserving cultural identity in a changing world. The book won the 2024 Singapore Literature Prize for English Fiction.

The Bee String
The Bee String
Paul Murray
The Bee Sting follows the Barnes family, whose seemingly comfortable life in a small Irish town begins to unravel under the weight of financial troubles, personal secrets, and emotional isolation. Dickie, the father, once ran a successful car dealership but finds his business collapsing during an economic downturn. His wife, Imelda, struggles with the consequences of her past and the loss of the glamorous life she once imagined for herself. Their teenage daughter, Cass, is torn between academic ambitions and the desire to escape her family, while her younger brother, PJ, quietly confronts his own fears and insecurities. Through the shifting perspectives of its four central characters, Murray explores the gap between how families present themselves and what happens behind closed doors. Blending dark humor with tragedy, the novel examines inherited trauma, denial, and the consequences of seemingly small decisions. Set against the backdrop of contemporary Ireland, The Bee Sting is an expansive portrait of a family struggling to hold itself together as its world falls apart.

Call and Response
Call and Response
Gothataone Moeng
Call and Response is a collection of nine short stories exploring the lives of ordinary families in contemporary Botswana as they navigate love, loss, tradition, and changing social expectations. Set between the rural village of Serowe and the capital city of Gaborone, the stories portray women and families negotiating the tensions between inherited customs and the desire for independence. The collection introduces a young widow struggling with the expectations surrounding mourning, a teenage girl confronting the responsibilities of caring for a dying relative, and sisters whose romantic lives challenge their family’s expectations. Other stories explore infidelity, sibling rivalry, sexuality, and the complicated bonds that connect generations. Through intimate portraits and richly observed everyday moments, Moeng reveals how private desires often conflict with public obligations. Her characters seek love, opportunity, and autonomy while remaining deeply connected to their families and communities. The result is a nuanced portrayal of a society balancing tradition with change, where ordinary conversations and family encounters reveal deeper questions about belonging, womanhood, and the meaning of a fulfilling life.

Western Lane
Western Lane
Chetna Maroo
Eleven-year-old Gopi lives in England with her father and two older sisters following the death of her mother. Struggling to express their grief, the family turns to squash, and Gopi gradually becomes consumed by the sport. The discipline of training provides structure and a way to connect with her father, but it also distances her from her sisters. As Gopi develops into a talented player, she discovers how competition, repetition, and physical movement can express emotions that words cannot. Maroo’s restrained prose captures the quiet complexities of family relationships, the isolation of grief, and the experience of growing up within a Gujarati immigrant family. Western Lane is a moving exploration of how people mourn differently and how shared routines can become a language of love and survival.

Seven Empty Houses
Seven Empty Houses
Samanta Schweblin
The seven houses in these seven stories are strange. A person is missing, or a truth, or memory; some rooms are enticing, some unmoored, others empty. But in Samanta Schweblin's tense, visionary tales, something always creeps back inside: a ghost, a fight, trespassers, a list of things to do before you die, a child's first encounter with darkness or the fallibility of parents. In each story, twists and turns will unnerve and surprise: Schweblin never takes the expected path and instead digs under the skin, revealing surreal truths about our sense of home, of belonging, and of the fragility of our connections with others. This is a masterwork from one of our most brilliant modern writers.

Intermezzo
Intermezzo
Sally Rooney
Intermezzo follows two Irish brothers, Peter and Ivan Koubek, as they struggle to navigate life after the death of their father. Peter, a successful Dublin lawyer in his thirties, appears to have everything under control, but beneath his confident exterior he is struggling with grief, insomnia, and complicated relationships with two women: Sylvia, his former partner, and Naomi, a much younger university student. Ivan, a socially awkward twenty-two-year-old competitive chess player, finds himself drawn to Margaret, an older woman whose own life is undergoing a period of uncertainty. Despite their shared loss, the brothers find it increasingly difficult to understand one another. Their differences in temperament, age, and approach to relationships create tension as they attempt to make sense of their changing lives. Through intimate psychological portraits and shifting perspectives, Rooney explores grief, masculinity, love, sibling relationships, and the ways people seek connection during periods of emotional upheaval. The title refers to an intermezzo, a musical interlude, reflecting a transitional moment in the brothers’ lives as they confront loss and reconsider who they want to become.
