The Tunnel

by Ernesto Sabato

Summary

The Tunnel is a psychological novel narrated by Juan Pablo Castel, an Argentine painter who confesses to murdering María Iribarne. From his prison cell, he recounts the events that led to the crime, beginning with an encounter at an art exhibition. Castel becomes fascinated by María after noticing that she is the only person who understands a small but meaningful detail in one of his paintings.

Convinced that they share a rare connection, Castel becomes increasingly obsessed with her. His longing to be understood gradually turns into jealousy, suspicion, and paranoia, making it impossible for him to distinguish genuine intimacy from his own fears. As his relationship with María deteriorates, he retreats further into isolation.

Through its unreliable narrator and claustrophobic atmosphere, Sábato explores alienation, obsession, and the human desire to be understood. The tunnel becomes a metaphor for Castel’s isolated inner world, in which he remains trapped despite his desperate search for connection.

Ernesto Sábato (1911–2011) was an Argentine novelist, essayist, and physicist, widely regarded as one of the most significant literary figures in twentieth-century Latin America. Born in Rojas, Buenos Aires Province, he studied physics and earned a doctorate before conducting research in Paris and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He eventually abandoned his scientific career to devote himself to literature and philosophy. His fiction explores existential anguish, moral responsibility, isolation, and the darker aspects of human nature. His debut novel, The Tunnel (El túnel, 1948), is a psychological narrative about obsession and alienation, while On Heroes and Tombs (1961) examines Argentine society, political turmoil, and personal despair. His final novel, The Angel of Darkness (1974), further develops his philosophical and psychological concerns. Beyond literature, Sábato played an important role in documenting Argentina’s history of state violence, serving as president of the National Commission on the Disappearance of Persons, which investigated disappearances during the country’s military dictatorship.
