Complete Stories

by Ingeborg Bachmann

Summary

What if the most intimate relationships in our lives were also where power, violence, and oppression began? Ingeborg Bachmann’s Complete Stories brings together the short fiction of one of the most important German-language writers of the twentieth century. Across stories set in Vienna, Rome, Paris, and beyond, Bachmann portrays women and men caught in relationships shaped by obsession, shame, silence, and unequal power. Lovers struggle to communicate, women confront the invisible restrictions imposed by patriarchal society, and ordinary lives reveal the lingering wounds of European fascism. With lyrical precision and psychological intensity, Bachmann explores the limits of language and the difficulty of telling the truth about ourselves and others. Both intimate and political, these stories reveal how history’s deepest structures of domination can persist in private life, long after the events that created them have passed.

Ingeborg Bachmann (1926–1973) was an Austrian poet, novelist, and short-story writer widely regarded as one of the most significant German-language authors of the postwar era. Born in Klagenfurt, she studied philosophy, psychology, and German literature before establishing herself as a major literary voice in the 1950s. Her writing confronted the moral and psychological legacy of Nazism, the failures of language, and the oppressive structures embedded in intimate relationships. In 1964, she received the prestigious Georg Büchner Prize, one of Germany’s highest literary honours. Her best-known works include the short-story collection The Thirtieth Year, the collection Three Paths to the Lake, and her experimental novel Malina. Bachmann’s distinctive prose combines lyrical beauty with philosophical inquiry and incisive social criticism. Although she died in Rome at the age of 47, her work continues to influence contemporary writers and feminist literary thought.
