Shazaf Fatima Haider is a Pakistani novelist known for her witty, perceptive portrayals of family life, marriage, and social expectations in South Asian communities. Her writing combines humour and satire with an interest in the tensions between individual desires and cultural traditions. Her debut novel, How It Happened (2012), explores arranged marriage and the intricate dynamics of an extended Pakistani family. Her second novel, A Firefly in the Dark (2018), is a children’s fantasy featuring a young girl and a mysterious jinn. With A Woman on a Suitcase (2024), Haider returns to the complexities of marriage and family, examining a woman’s struggle to escape an oppressive relationship and establish her independence. Haider’s fiction is rooted in the social and cultural realities of Pakistan, particularly the expectations placed on women within marriage and extended family structures. Her distinctive blend of sharp wit, warmth, and emotional insight allows her to address difficult subjects while exposing the absurdities of social conventions. She lives in St Albans, England, with her husband and four children.
