About

Carlos Luis Fallas (1909–1966), widely known by his nickname Calufa, was a Costa Rican novelist, labor activist, and political leader whose writing exposed the inequalities faced by working-class communities. Born in Alajuela, Costa Rica, he received limited formal education before moving to the Caribbean province of Limón, where he worked for the United Fruit Company. His firsthand experience of the harsh conditions endured by plantation workers shaped both his political activism and his literary career. Fallas became a prominent figure in Costa Rica’s labor movement and Communist Party, helping lead the major banana workers’ strike of 1934. His best-known novel, Mamita Yunai (1941), drew attention to exploitation and injustice on banana plantations and became a landmark of Costa Rican social literature. His other works include Marcos Ramírez (1952), a partly autobiographical novel about childhood. In 1965, he received Costa Rica’s Magón National Culture Award.
