Abdourahman A. Waberi is a Djiboutian novelist, poet, essayist, and academic, born in Djibouti City in 1965. He moved to France in 1985 to study English literature and subsequently developed an international literary career exploring colonialism, exile, migration, and the complex relationship between Africa and the Western world. Waberi first attracted attention with Le Pays sans ombre (The Land Without Shadows, 1994), a collection of stories depicting life in Djibouti. His later works include Cahier nomade (1996), In the United States of Africa (2006), and Passage des larmes (2009). His writing often combines experimental narrative techniques, political commentary, folklore, and philosophical reflection to challenge conventional perspectives on African identity and global power. Recognised as one of the leading voices in contemporary Francophone African literature, Waberi has received several literary honours, including the Grand Prix littéraire d’Afrique noire in 1996. He teaches Francophone literature and creative writing at George Washington University in the United States.
