About

Mircea Cărtărescu (born 1956) is a Romanian novelist, poet, essayist, and literary critic, widely regarded as one of the most important contemporary writers in Romanian literature. Born in Bucharest, he studied Romanian language and literature at the University of Bucharest, graduating in 1980. He initially established himself as a poet before turning to prose, developing a distinctive literary style that combines surrealism, magical realism, dreamlike imagery, and philosophical reflection. His notable works include Nostalgia (1989), Travesti (1994), and the ambitious Blinding trilogy (1996–2007). His writing frequently explores memory, childhood, identity, dreams, and the strange relationship between reality and imagination, often transforming Bucharest into a surreal, almost mythical landscape. Cărtărescu has received numerous international literary honours, including the Thomas Mann Prize in 2018 and the Dublin Literary Award in 2024. His works have been translated into many languages, establishing him as one of Romania’s most internationally celebrated literary voices.
