About

Kristín Ómarsdóttir (born 1962) is an Icelandic novelist, poet, playwright, and visual artist known for her imaginative, unconventional approach to literature. Born in Reykjavík, she studied Icelandic literature, general literary studies, and Spanish at the University of Iceland. Her literary career began with the poetry collection Í húsinu okkar er þoka (There Is Fog in Our House), published in 1987, followed by her first novel, Svartir brúðarkjólar (Black Wedding Dresses), in 1992. Ómarsdóttir has published numerous novels, poetry collections, short stories, and plays. Her work frequently blends surrealism, dark humour, lyrical language, and unexpected narrative structures. She has received several prestigious Icelandic literary awards, including the Icelandic Women’s Literature Prize in 2008 and the Gríman Award for Playwright of the Year in 2005. Her writing has also been nominated for the Nordic Council Literature Prize. Swanfolk, originally published in Icelandic in 2019, exemplifies her distinctive ability to combine the fantastical with explorations of human psychology and identity.
