About

Állex Leilla, born Alessandra Leila Borges Gomes Fernandes in 1971, is a Brazilian novelist, short-story writer, and professor of literature from Bom Jesus da Lapa, Bahia. Her literary work explores gender, sexuality, desire, and the tensions between individual freedom and social expectations, often challenging conventional representations of intimacy and identity. Leilla began attracting attention with her debut short-story collection, Urbanos (1997), which received the BRASKEM Prize awarded by the Fundação Casa de Jorge Amado. She subsequently published works including Obscuros (1999), Henrique (2001), and O Sol que a Chuva Apagou (2009). Her second novel, Primavera nos ossos (2010), received support from the Petrobras Cultural Program and established her as a distinctive voice in contemporary Brazilian fiction. Alongside her writing career, Leilla has taught Portuguese literature at the Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana and earned a doctorate in comparative literature from the Federal University of Minas Gerais. Her fiction is noted for its experimental structures, poetic language, and frank engagement with subjects that challenge social conventions. The English translation of Springtime in the Bones, published in 2026 and translated by Amanda Sarasien, introduced Leilla’s work to a broader international readership, bringing renewed attention to her exploration of trauma, revenge, and women’s autonomy.
