About

Ayad Akhtar is an American novelist, playwright, and screenwriter born in Staten Island, New York, in 1970 to Pakistani parents. He grew up in Brookfield, Wisconsin, and studied theater and religion at Brown University before earning a Master of Fine Arts from Columbia University’s School of the Arts. His Pakistani American background and interest in religion, culture, and belonging have informed much of his literary work. Akhtar gained international recognition with his play Disgraced (2012), which explores race, religion, and identity through the story of a successful Pakistani American lawyer. The play won the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and was nominated for a Tony Award. His other acclaimed plays include The Who & The What (2014), Junk (2016), and McNeal (2024). As a novelist, Akhtar made his debut with American Dervish (2012), a coming-of-age story set in a Pakistani American Muslim community. His subsequent novel, Homeland Elegies (2020), blends fiction and autobiography to examine immigration, family, politics, and the meaning of American identity. His work has received numerous literary honors, and he was named New York State Author in 2021. Akhtar’s writing frequently explores the tensions between personal identity and public life, the relationship between faith and reason, and the complexities of belonging in contemporary America.
