J. K. Chukwu is an American writer and visual artist from the Midwestern United States. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Literary Arts from Brown University, where she developed her interest in experimental storytelling and unconventional narrative forms. Chukwu made her literary debut with The Unfortunates (2023), an inventive novel that combines fiction with elements of academic writing, digital communication, playlists, and visual collage. Through the perspective of Sahara, a queer, half-Nigerian Black college student, Chukwu examines racism, institutional inequality, identity, and mental health in American higher education. Her work has appeared in literary publications including Black Warrior Review, DIAGRAM, and TAYO Literary Magazine. Chukwu’s writing is distinguished by its experimental structure, biting humor, and engagement with the experiences of marginalized communities. The Unfortunates established her as a distinctive emerging voice in contemporary American fiction.
