Katya Suvorova is a Russian-born American writer based in Seattle, Washington. She grew up as an undocumented immigrant in Houston, Texas, after her mother brought her from Russia to the United States when she was three years old. Her childhood was marked by family instability, financial insecurity, and responsibilities that forced her to grow up before her time. Suvorova studied creative writing and initially pursued fiction before turning to memoir. Her writing draws on her experiences of immigration, childhood adversity, complicated family relationships, and the search for personal identity. With a distinctive blend of dark humour and emotional honesty, she explores the tensions between parental sacrifice and a child’s right to independence. Her debut memoir, Ungrateful Immigrant Daughter: A Memoir From the Child of a Mail-Order Bride, examines her upbringing as the daughter of a Russian mail-order bride and raises difficult questions about gratitude, family obligation, and belonging. Now a US citizen, Suvorova writes about the experiences that shaped her life and the complicated realities behind the pursuit of a better future.
