Padma Viswanathan is an Indian-born Canadian novelist, playwright, translator, and essayist known for her exploration of family history, cultural identity, migration, and the legacies of colonialism. Born in India, she grew up partly in Canada and the United States before establishing her literary career. Her writing often examines the connections between personal lives and larger historical forces, particularly the ways family relationships and inherited traditions shape individual identity. Her debut novel, The Toss of a Lemon (2008), follows three generations of a Brahmin family in southern India across much of the twentieth century, exploring caste, gender, religion, and social transformation. The novel received international recognition and was shortlisted for several literary awards. Her subsequent works include The Ever After of Ashwin Rao (2014), which examines the aftermath of the 1985 Air India bombing, and Like Every Form of Love (2021), a novel exploring relationships and belonging. Through richly detailed narratives, Viswanathan investigates how historical memory, cultural inheritance, and migration influence the ways people understand themselves and their place in the world.
