Charles Yu is an American novelist, short-story writer, and television screenwriter born in Los Angeles, California, in 1976. Of Taiwanese American heritage, he studied molecular and cellular biology at the University of California, Berkeley, before earning a law degree from the University of Southern California. Yu is known for his inventive storytelling, blending science fiction, absurdist humour, and philosophical reflection to explore identity, family, time, and the Asian American experience. His novel Interior Chinatown (2020), which won the National Book Award for Fiction, follows an aspiring Asian American actor trapped in stereotypical Hollywood roles, using the structure of a screenplay to examine race, representation, and belonging. His other works include How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe (2010), a metafictional exploration of time travel, and Sorry Please Thank You (2012), a collection of short stories. Yu’s writing combines experimental form with emotional depth, questioning how cultural narratives shape individual lives.
