About

Tsitsi Dangarembga is a Zimbabwean novelist, playwright, filmmaker, and cultural activist born in 1959 in Mutoko, then part of Southern Rhodesia. She spent part of her childhood in England before returning to Rhodesia, an experience that shaped her understanding of colonialism, cultural identity, and belonging. She studied medicine at the University of Cambridge before returning to Zimbabwe to pursue psychology and later filmmaking. Her debut novel, Nervous Conditions (1988), became a landmark of African literature and was the first book published in English by a Black Zimbabwean woman. The novel explores colonial education, gender inequality, and the psychological costs of navigating conflicting cultural expectations. It was followed by The Book of Not (2006) and This Mournable Body (2018), the latter shortlisted for the Booker Prize. Dangarembga’s work examines the intersections of gender, race, class, and colonial history, giving voice to women’s struggles for autonomy and self-determination.
