About

Miroslav Penkov is a Bulgarian-American writer born in Gabrovo, Bulgaria, in 1982. He moved to the United States in 2001 to study psychology at the University of Arkansas, where he later earned an MFA in creative writing. Writing in English, Penkov explores the complex relationship between personal identity, national history, and the experience of migration. His debut short-story collection, East of the West: A Country in Stories (2011), received the BBC Short Story Award in 2012 and was widely praised for its portrayal of life in Bulgaria and the shifting borders of Eastern Europe. His stories often combine dark humour, folklore, and historical memory to examine family relationships, political upheaval, and the enduring consequences of communism. His novel Stork Mountain (2016) further explores Bulgaria’s cultural and historical landscape, reflecting on the tensions between tradition and modernity, belonging and displacement.
