About

Fernando Pessoa (1888–1935) was a Portuguese poet, writer, and literary critic, widely regarded as one of the most significant figures in modernist literature. Born in Lisbon, he developed an innovative literary approach through the creation of multiple literary personae, known as heteronyms, each with distinct biographies, philosophies, and writing styles. His most celebrated heteronyms include Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis, and Álvaro de Campos, allowing him to explore different perspectives on identity, existence, nature, and the human condition. Although he published relatively little during his lifetime, his posthumously discovered writings established his international reputation. His best-known work, The Book of Disquiet, is a fragmentary collection of philosophical reflections on solitude, consciousness, and the complexities of everyday life. Pessoa’s experimental approach to authorship and his profound exploration of the divided self made him a central figure in twentieth-century Portuguese literature.
