About

Semezdin Mehmedinović is a Bosnian poet, writer, and essayist known for his intimate, lyrical explorations of memory, exile, war, and identity. Born in Kiseljak, Bosnia and Herzegovina, in 1960, he became an important literary voice during the breakup of Yugoslavia and the Bosnian War. His writing often blends autobiography, poetry, and fragmented prose to capture the emotional realities of displacement and the search for belonging. After leaving Sarajevo during the war, he eventually settled in the United States, where his experiences as an immigrant shaped much of his later work. His acclaimed book My Heart (2017; English translation published in 2021) combines personal reflections on family, illness, memory, and migration. Through understated language and keen observation, Mehmedinović explores how historical upheaval and personal loss shape the ways people understand themselves and their connections to home.
