Jung Chang is a Chinese-born British writer best known for her powerful memoirs and biographies exploring modern Chinese history, family, and political upheaval. Born in Yibin, Sichuan, in 1952, she grew up during the Maoist era and experienced the Cultural Revolution before moving to Britain in 1978. Her international bestseller Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China (1991) traces the lives of three generations of women in her family, offering a personal perspective on China’s turbulent twentieth century. She later co-authored Mao: The Unknown Story (2005) with historian Jon Halliday and wrote biographies of Empress Dowager Cixi and the Soong sisters. Combining personal testimony with historical research, Chang examines the effects of authoritarianism, revolution, and social transformation on individual lives and family relationships.
