About

Manuel Mujica Láinez (1910–1984) was an Argentine novelist, short-story writer, journalist, and translator, celebrated for his elegant prose, historical imagination, and exploration of Argentine culture. Born in Buenos Aires into a prominent family, he drew inspiration from the city’s history, European influences, and the traditions of the Argentine aristocracy. His writing often combines historical fiction, satire, fantasy, and elements of the supernatural to examine power, decadence, memory, and the passage of time. His best-known works include Misteriosa Buenos Aires (1950), a collection of stories tracing the history of Buenos Aires, and Bomarzo (1962), a historical novel set in Renaissance Italy that became one of his most acclaimed works. Through his richly detailed narratives, Mujica Láinez explored the relationship between history, art, and the enduring complexities of human ambition.
