About

Banu Mushtaq is an Indian writer, lawyer, journalist, and activist who writes in Kannada, a language spoken primarily in the southern Indian state of Karnataka. Associated with the Bandaya Sahitya (protest literature) movement, her work explores the lives of Muslim women and marginalized communities, examining gender inequality, religious conservatism, caste, and social injustice. Her writing combines sharp social observation with warmth, irony, and compassion, giving voice to women whose experiences are often overlooked in mainstream literature. Her short-story collection Heart Lamp, translated into English by Deepa Bhasthi, won the International Booker Prize in 2025, marking a historic achievement for Kannada literature. Through her fiction and activism, Mushtaq challenges patriarchal structures and highlights the complexities of everyday life in contemporary India.
