About

Maurice Maeterlinck was a Belgian playwright, poet, and essayist, born in Ghent in 1862. A central figure of European Symbolism, he became known for works that explore fate, death, silence, mystery, spirituality, and the unseen forces shaping human existence. His plays—including Pelléas and Mélisande, The Blind, and The Intruder—helped establish Symbolist drama, while his later nonfiction turned toward nature, mysticism, and philosophical questions. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911.
