About

Banine was the pen name of Umm El-Banu Assadullayeva (1905–1992), an Azerbaijani-born writer who grew up in Baku and later fled the country following the Russian Revolution. She settled in Paris, where she became part of a literary circle that included writers such as André Malraux, Ivan Bunin, and Nicos Kazantzakis. Days in the Caucasus, first published in French in 1945, became her best-known work.
