Ananda Devi is a Mauritian novelist, poet, short-story writer, and one of the leading voices in contemporary Francophone literature. Born in 1957 in Trois-Boutiques, Mauritius, she comes from a family of Telugu Indian descent and grew up surrounded by several languages and cultural traditions. She studied social anthropology and earned a doctorate from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London. Her academic background and experience of different cultures have deeply influenced her exploration of identity, gender, class, and belonging. Writing primarily in French while incorporating elements of Creole and Hindi, Devi has published numerous novels, poetry collections, and short stories. Her notable works include Eve Out of Her Ruins (2006), Indian Tango (2007), and The Living Days (2013). She received the Prix des cinq continents de la Francophonie in 2006 and the prestigious 2024 Neustadt International Prize for Literature. Her writing frequently gives voice to marginalised women and individuals confronting violence, social exclusion, and the restrictions imposed by their communities.
