About Mauritius

Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar, known for volcanic mountains, tropical forests, coral reefs, lagoons, and beaches. Port Louis is the country’s cultural and economic center, while landmarks such as Le Morne Brabant reflect both the island’s dramatic landscape and its history. Mauritius has a remarkably diverse population shaped by African, Indian, Chinese, French, and British influences, with Mauritian Creole, English, French, and several ancestral languages present in everyday life.

Literary Context

Mauritian literature is deeply connected to the island’s multicultural and multilingual identity. Oral traditions, folktales, songs, proverbs, and storytelling developed alongside French, Creole, and later English-language literary traditions. The experience of migration and indenture, particularly the arrival of Indian communities during the colonial period, has also played an important role in shaping the country’s cultural memory. One of Mauritius’s most internationally recognized writers is J. M. G. Le Clézio, whose family roots are Mauritian and whose work frequently explores displacement, colonial history, migration, and the relationship between people and landscape. Other important writers include Ananda Devi, Nathacha Appanah, and Édouard Maunick. Contemporary Mauritian literature often explores identity, diaspora, colonialism, race, language, family, belonging, and the experience of living between several cultural worlds.
