Lily Brooks-Dalton is an American novelist and memoirist whose work explores humanity’s relationship with nature, isolation, and the uncertain future. Her writing combines atmospheric storytelling with thoughtful examinations of how people respond to extraordinary circumstances. Her previous novel, Good Morning, Midnight (2016), follows a scientist stranded in the Arctic as he attempts to contact a returning spacecraft. It inspired the film The Midnight Sky. Her climate-focused novel The Light Pirate (2022) imagines a Florida community confronting the consequences of rising seas and environmental collapse. Her memoir, Motorcycles I’ve Loved, was a finalist for the Oregon Book Award. Published in 2026, Ruins continues Brooks-Dalton’s exploration of humanity’s relationship with the past and the future. Through an archaeologist’s search for a lost civilisation, she considers how knowledge, ambition, and inherited beliefs shape our understanding of the world. Brooks-Dalton lives in Los Angeles.
