Fatima Farheen Mirza is an American novelist born in California in 1991 to parents of Indian descent. Her mother grew up in Birmingham, England, and her father in Hyderabad, India. Growing up in California in an Indian-American family helped inform her interest in the intersections of culture, religion, family, and belonging. Mirza studied creative writing at the prestigious Iowa Writers’ Workshop, where she received the Michener-Copernicus Fellowship. Before becoming widely known as a novelist, she developed her craft through years of writing and studying literature. Her work is characterised by its intimate attention to family relationships, emotional complexity, and the unspoken tensions that can exist between generations. Her debut novel, A Place for Us, was published in 2018 as the first book released by SJP for Hogarth, the publishing imprint founded in collaboration with actor Sarah Jessica Parker. The novel became a New York Times bestseller and received widespread critical attention for its sensitive portrayal of an Indian-American Muslim family negotiating tradition and modernity. In 2020, Mirza was named a National Book Foundation 5 Under 35 honoree, recognising her as one of the most promising young fiction writers in the United States. Through her writing, Mirza explores the ways family, faith, and cultural expectations shape individual lives. Her work invites readers to look beyond outward disagreements and consider the love, vulnerability, and longing that often lie beneath them.
