About

Andrus Kivirähk (born 1970) is an Estonian novelist, playwright, journalist, and children’s author, widely regarded as one of the most popular and distinctive contemporary writers in Estonia. Born in Tallinn, he graduated from the University of Tartu in 1993 with a degree in journalism. He subsequently worked for several Estonian newspapers, becoming known for his humorous, provocative, and satirical commentary on society and national identity. Kivirähk’s writing frequently draws on Estonian folklore, mythology, and cultural history, combining traditional stories with absurd situations, dark comedy, and imaginative world-building. His work often questions the stories nations tell about themselves, exploring the tensions between tradition and modernity, belief and reason, and cultural heritage and social change. Through his novels, plays, and journalistic writing, Kivirähk has established a distinctive literary voice that uses humour and fantasy to explore serious questions about history, belonging, and the survival of cultural traditions. He continues to be an influential figure in Estonian literature.
