About

Sahar Khalifeh is a Palestinian novelist and feminist writer born in Nablus in 1941. Widely recognized as one of the most influential voices in contemporary Palestinian literature, she explores the experiences of women, the realities of occupation, and the effects of political conflict on everyday life. Her writing frequently challenges patriarchal traditions while examining the relationship between personal freedom and collective struggle. After an early marriage, Khalifeh returned to education and pursued higher studies in English literature and women’s studies. She earned a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina and a doctorate in women’s studies and American literature from the University of Iowa. Her experiences living through political upheaval in Palestine have deeply informed her fiction. Khalifeh made her literary debut with We Are Not Your Slave Girls Anymore (1974). Her notable novels include Wild Thorns (1976), which examines life under Israeli occupation, The Inheritance (2005), and The Image, the Icon, and the Covenant, which won the Naguib Mahfouz Medal for Literature in 2006. Her works have been translated into numerous languages, bringing Palestinian experiences and women’s perspectives to international audiences.
