About

Jacques Poulin (1937–2025) was a celebrated French-Canadian novelist from Saint-Gédéon-de-Beauce, Quebec. After studying psychology and literature at Université Laval, he worked as a guidance counsellor and translator before dedicating himself to writing. His novels are known for their minimalist prose, quiet humour, and compassionate portrayals of people navigating loneliness, love, and the complexities of human connection. Quebec’s landscapes, particularly Quebec City and the St. Lawrence River, feature prominently in his work. His best-known novels include Volkswagen Blues (1984), Spring Tides (1978), and Mr. Blue (1989). Poulin received numerous honours, including the Governor General’s Award for French-language fiction for Spring Tides and the prestigious Prix Athanase-David for his overall contribution to Quebec literature. His understated style made ordinary encounters feel quietly profound.
