About

Françoise Sagan (1935–2004) was a French novelist, playwright, and screenwriter known for her elegant prose and perceptive portrayals of love, desire, emotional detachment, and the uncertainties of modern life. She rose to international fame at just 18 with her debut novel, Bonjour tristesse (1954), which explores youthful rebellion, sexuality, and the moral conventions of postwar French society. Her writing often focuses on wealthy, disillusioned characters navigating complicated relationships and seeking pleasure while confronting loneliness and existential emptiness. Other notable works include A Certain Smile (1956) and Aimez-vous Brahms… (1959). Associated with the spirit of postwar French intellectual and cultural freedom, Sagan challenged conventional expectations of women’s behavior and independence. Her distinctive blend of psychological insight, understated melancholy, and sophisticated storytelling established her as one of the defining literary voices of twentieth-century France.
